N-Butyl acetate (
C6H12O2cap C sub 6 cap H sub 12 cap O sub 2𝐶6𝐻12𝑂2 ) is a colorless, flammable liquid ester with a distinct fruity, banana-like odor. It is widely used as a high-boiling solvent in paints, coatings, nail polish removers, and fragrances due to its moderate polarity and rapid evaporation rate. It has low water solubility but is miscible with common organic solvents.
- Appearance: Clear, colorless liquid.
- Odor: Fruity, sweet (banana or apple-like).
- Safety: Highly flammable; vapors are heavier than air and can cause distant ignition.
- Boiling Point: ≈126∘Cis approximately equal to 126 raised to the composed with power C≈126∘C (259.7∘F259.7 raised to the composed with power F259.7∘F).
- Melting Point: ≈-78∘Cis approximately equal to negative 78 raised to the composed with power C≈−78∘C (-108∘Fnegative 108 raised to the composed with power F−108∘F).
- Flash Point: 22∘C22 raised to the composed with power C22∘C (72∘F72 raised to the composed with power F72∘F).
- Density: 0.88 g/cm30.88 g/cm cubed0.88 g/cm3 at 20∘C20 raised to the composed with power C20∘C (lighter than water).
- Solvent: Used extensively in cellulose nitrate lacquers, coatings, and plastics to improve gloss and flow.
- Flavors & Fragrances: Used as a synthetic fruit flavoring in food (e.g., candy, ice cream).
- Industrial: Acts as an extraction solvent, in leather manufacturing, and cleaning agents.
It should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, open flames, and strong oxidizing agents. It is generally considered to have low toxicity, but inhalation can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and irritation
