Ortho-xylene (o-xylene) is a colorless, flammable, aromatic hydrocarbon (C8H10cap C sub 8 cap H sub 10𝐶8𝐻10) with a sweet odor, primarily used as a chemical intermediate in manufacturing phthalic anhydride, plasticizers, and polyester resins. It is one of three xylene isomers, characterized by two methyl groups at the 1,2-positions of a benzene ring. It is also used as a solvent in paints, coatings, and printing.

Key Characteristics & Specifications
  • Chemical Name/Formula: 1,2-Dimethylbenzene / C6H4(CH3)2cap C sub 6 cap H sub 4 open paren cap C cap H sub 3 close paren sub 2𝐶6𝐻4(𝐶𝐻3)2.
  • Appearance: Clear, colorless, oily, flammable liquid.
  • Properties: Insoluble in water, soluble in organic solvents, density ∼0.88 g/cm3tilde 0.88 g/cm cubed∼0.88 g/cm3, boiling point ∼144∘Ctilde 144 raised to the composed with power C∼144∘C.

Industrial Applications
  • Phthalic Anhydride Production: The primary use is as a feedstock for producing phthalic anhydride, essential for plasticizers (PVC), alkyd resins, and polyester resins.
  • Polyester Production: Key raw material for producing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles and polyester clothing.
  • Solvent Use: Used in thinning paints, varnishes, and in the printing, rubber, and leather industries.
  • Other Uses: Used in producing bactericides, soya bean herbicides, lube oil additives, and polyethylene naphthalate (PEN).
Safety & Hazards
  • Hazards: Flammable liquid; vapors can cause eye and skin irritation.
  • Health Effects: Prolonged exposure may cause respiratory irritation and central nervous system effects (headache, dizziness).
  • Storage: Should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources
