Monoethylene glycol (MEG) is a colorless, odorless, slightly viscous liquid with the chemical formula C2H6O2:

PropertiesMEG is miscible with water, alcohols, and many organic compounds. It has a low volatility and is 50% more hygroscopic than glycerol at room temperature.
ProductionMEG is produced by the oxidation of ethylene at a high temperature in the presence of a silver oxide catalyst.
UsesMEG is used in the production of polyester, antifreeze, coolants, aircraft anti-icers, and de-icers. It is also used as a dehydrating agent, humectant, and industrial solvent.
Other usesMEG can also be used as a component in adhesives, plasticizers, and softening agents for packaging that has direct contact with food or beverage. It can also be used for deodorizing or air “purifying” purposes by spraying as an aerosol.
