Ortho-xylene, also known as o-xylene or 1,2-dimethyl-benzene, is a colorless, flammable, and slightly oily aromatic hydrocarbon: 

• Chemical formula: C6H4(CH3)2 
• Properties: Less dense than water, insoluble in water, and has a sweet odor 
• Environmental behavior: Floats on water at 20°C, and is low to moderately volatile 
• Health and safety: Toxic and flammable, and should be handled with care 
• Uses: A solvent in the pharmaceutical, printing, rubber, cleaning agent, paint thinner, varnish, synthetic fiber, and leather industries 
• Production: Derived from crude oil sources, and is a component of the mixed xylenes stream 
• Storage: Should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area, and containers should be grounded and bonded 

Exposure to xylene can cause a variety of health issues, including:

• Dizziness, weakness, irritability, vomiting, and slowed reaction time
• Headaches, irritability, depression, insomnia, agitation, extreme tiredness, tremors, hearing loss, impaired concentration, and short-term memory loss
