Physical propertiesAcetonitrile is a weak base with a density of 0.783 g/cm3, a melting point of -46 to -44°C, and a boiling point of 81.3 to 82.1°C. It is less dense than water, but its vapors are denser than air.
UsesAcetonitrile is used in many industrial applications, including as a solvent, in the production of batteries, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and rubber products, and in the extraction and refining of copper.
Environmental impactAcetonitrile can enter the environment through manufacturing effluent, municipal waste treatment plant discharges, and air as vapor. It can have slight acute and chronic toxicity to aquatic life.
Health effectsAcetonitrile is toxic by skin absorption and can be acutely lethal when absorbed in high doses. Short-term inhalation exposure can irritate mucous membranes, and chronic exposure can result in central nervous system effects.
Legal limitsThe legal airborne permissible exposure limit (PEL) for acetonitrile is 40 ppm averaged over an 8-hour workshift.
