Mineral Turpentine Oil (MTO), also called white spirit or mineral spirits, is a petroleum-derived solvent, a clear liquid made of C7-C12 hydrocarbons used as a thinner for paints, varnishes, and enamels, and as a cleaning/degreasing agent for tools, brushes, and industrial parts. It's a cheaper, less toxic substitute for natural turpentine, prized for its excellent solvency and ability to reduce viscosity in coatings, but requires good ventilation as it's flammable and fumes can be harmful

Composition & Properties

  • Source: A refined fraction of crude oil.
  • Components: A blend of paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic hydrocarbons.
  • Appearance: Clear, water-white liquid.
  • Evaporation: Medium evaporation rate, leaves no residue.
Key Uses
  • Paints & Coatings: Thins oil-based paints, varnishes, lacquers, and enamels.
  • Cleaning: Degreases metal parts, cleans paint brushes, removes adhesives.
  • Industrial: Solvent in aerosols, wood preservatives, and asphalt products.
  • Extraction: Used as an extraction solvent.
Important Considerations
  • Safety: Flammable; always use in well-ventilated areas to avoid inhalation hazards.
  • Not True Turpentine: Mineral turpentine is a petroleum-based substitute, not the natural resin distillate from pine trees, which is more toxic.

Double Distilled Turpentine Oil (DDTO) is a high-purity, clear, water-white, volatile liquid derived from pine resin, commonly used as a specialized solvent, thinner, and cleaner. It undergoes a strict, second-stage distillation process to remove contaminants, improving upon standard turpentine. It consists mainly of cyclic terpenes like pinenes, boasting a characteristic pine scent and excellent dissolving properties for resins and oils

Key Characteristics and Properties
  • Purity: Typically 99% to 100% (Pharma/Industrial grade).
  • Appearance: Clear, colorless to water-white liquid.
  • Odor: Distinct, sharp pine aroma.
  • Composition: Primarily monoterpenes like αalpha-pinene, βbeta-pinene, and carene.
  • Solubility: Insoluble in water; soluble in turpentine, benzene, and petroleum ether.
  • Flash Point: 95∘F95 raised to the composed with power cap F95∘ (35∘C35 raised to the composed with power cap C35∘).
Key Uses
  • Solvent & Thinner: Used in paints, varnishes, enamels, and stains.
  • Industrial Applications: Used in the production of resins, chemicals, adhesives, and camphor.
  • Cleaning Agent: Used for removing tree sap, grease, and industrial residues.
  • Fragrance/Pharma: Used in aromatherapy and as a raw material in perfumery.
Advantages of Double Distillation
The extra distillation step improves stability, removes impurities, and ensures higher, consistent quality, making it more efficient than single-distilled or lower-grade alternatives. It is sometimes referred to as "rectified turpentine oil" in specific applications like dentistry.
